Conference Objectives
The Conference will provide diverse and exciting opportunities for learning and sharing, networking and connecting as well as debating and shaping visions and plans for the future. The Conference objectives are:

• to celebrate 15 years of the Healthy Cities movement in Europe and globally;

• to learn from and debate the vast experience of cities, towns, municipalities, communities and civil-society organizations that are committed to health and sustainable development;

• to strengthen political commitment and strategic alliances at the local, regional, national and international level; and

• to shape goals, strategies and visions for the future.

Conference themes and topics
The Conference will demonstrate the Power of Local Action for health and sustainable development by

BUILDING STRONG PARTNERSHIPS, ALLIANCES AND NETWORKS
TACKLING THE WIDER DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH
DESIGNING SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENTS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF ALL CITIZENS
CREATING EFFECTIVE POLICIES, STRATEGIES AND TOOLS FOR ACTION

The conference will put special emphasis on the following:

• Leadership, governance, empowerment and democracy
• Partnership-based planning for health and sustainable development
• Globalization, strategic networking and city-to-city co-operation


• Poverty, equity and the social determinants of health
• Conflict, violence and community safety
• Tobacco, nutrition, HIV/AIDS and active living

• Healthy environments for children and youth
• Cities supportive of older people and people with disabilities
• Urban planning, regeneration, housing and transport

• The role of local governments in national and international policies
• Healthy Settings approaches
• Evidence-based public policy and health impact assessment

The programme will be of interest to politicians, professionals, academics, non-governmental organizations and community organizations operating at both strategic and local level, including:

  delegations from WHO project cities and national Healthy Cities networks
   
  delegations from Networks of Healthy Municipalities, Healthy Communities, Healthy Villages, Healthy Districts and Healthy Islands and other similar WHO initiatives.
   
  cities and Networks involved in the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign
   
  delegations from Healthy Settings Networks and initiatives
