Dr John Sweeney, Senior Lecturer in Geography, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, opened proceedings with an extensive presentation on a range of climate change issues which looked at areas from mortality peeks in hot weather to the distribution of world population. The second speaker Dr John Gilliland, Vice Chair, Sustainable Development Commission argued that NI should develop a specialised economic sector focusing on developing sustainable technology with the idea that profit from sustainable development is possible. |

Events

Tanja Wolf, from WHO’s Global Change and Health Unit stated that local health authorities should prepare for greater health risks in future as climate change begins to take affect. She added that planners and health authorities should work closely with climate experts to prepare communities and cities for the looming threat.
