URBACT Web Story

Regeneration can help improve health and equity – and healthy people are the heart of vibrant and sustainable places. Good data and indicators can maximise the potential for achieving shared benefits, by highlighting key issues at the outset and pinpointing areas for attention throughout the process.

Belfast Healthy Cities has published its contribution to an EU study into Building Healthy Communities. The discussion document, “Good for health, Good for Regeneration, Good for Belfast” seeks to identify effective ways of monitoring how regeneration affects health and equity.  It also highlights that healthy people are key to a stable economy.

Belfast Healthy Cities Chief Executive Joan Devlin said that this report fills a gap.

“Over the last decade Belfast has benefited significantly from regeneration and investment. What is less well  known is the impact regeneration has had in terms of tackling inequalities. This report sets out to fill that gap by identifying indicators which can be used to inform and monitor how regeneration affects people across population groups and their economic progress.”

This project was led by Belfast Healthy Cities in partnership with Belfast City Council and the EU URbact II programme. All Area Based Partnerships in Belfast were also engaged in the study. The innovative design was developed with Erica Ison, an internationally recognised expert in health impact assessment, who also authored the report.
