Belfast Healthy Cities Awards celebrate the city’s health & wellbeing

Belfast Healthy Cities is celebrating individuals and organisations that strive to make Belfast a healthier city with their annual awards. Now in its 10th year, the 2022 Healthy Cities Awards will highlight the work which is taking place right across the city to improve the health and wellbeing of citizens in Belfast.

The awards categories have been widened this year to ensure that even more organisations working in the community have an opportunity to enter. The new categories will still reflect the ethos of the WHO Healthy Cities programme.

The 2022 award categories include the Belfast Healthy Cities Impact Award, the Belfast Healthy City Explorer Award and the Healthy Champions of Belfast awards, which will have three selections, one for a young person between the ages of 16-25 years old; one for an individual;and one for an organisation.

The awards are open to all sectors, including statutory, voluntary, community and private sector organisations. Previous winners include the East Belfast Community Development Agency, Ligoniel Healthy Living Centre, HERe NI, Bosco Café, Artillery Youth Group and Council for the Homeless.

Launching the 2022 Awards, Joan Devlin, Chief Executive of Belfast Healthy Cities, said

“The 2022 Healthy Cities Awards will once again highlight the incredible work being done to promote health and wellbeing. Now in our 10th year, we have seen the Belfast Healthy Cities Awards grow across our communities and sectors, always reflecting the core themes and values of the World Health Organization.

“Since their launch a decade ago the Belfast Healthy City Awards have proven popular among the community and other sectors in the city.  Many organisations who have entered have told us about the importance of the awards being city wide and that they recognize projects of all sizes and scope. Groups in our communities such as sports, clubs and charities play a vital role in the wider health and wellbeing of the people of Belfast, alongside public sector initiatives. Their work and the promotion of wellbeing and health undoubtedly creates stronger bonds in our local communities.

“We have opened a new category this year which will highlight the work undertaken by our young people in particular. There are countless examples of young people taking responsibility to drive a positive health agenda in their local communities and we want to recognise that.”
