Belfast Healthy Cities welcome new pop up cycle lanes in Belfast

Belfast Healthy Cities, the World Health Organisation representative in Belfast, has welcomed the announcement that new pop-up cycle lanes are being introduced in Belfast.

Speaking after the announcement by the Infrastructure Minister, Joan Devlin, Chief Executive of Belfast Healthy Cities, said “This is a really positive move for Belfast. The opportunity that we have to improve the health and wellbeing of all our citizens by making the streets of Belfast cycle and pedestrian friendly is immense.

“When we visit other WHO European Healthy Cities, such as Utrecht in the Netherlands, it is striking how well the city operates with a focus on travelling by foot and bike. The benefit can be seen in the wider wellbeing outcomes of these cities.

“Each step forward we can make to adapting our city infrastructure to benefit biking and walking is one that should be embraced by us all. I hope more people will continue to walk and cycle over the coming months, and that these new bike lanes will bring pedal power to the heart of a new, active Belfast.”
