Giving a Voice to Local Children, North Belfast
Following on from last week’s event with schools from South, East and West Belfast, Belfast Healthy Cities again provided a platform for local children from North Belfast to give their views on the development of Child Friendly spaces in Belfast under the theme ‘Healthy Places, Healthy Children’ with Belfast Lord Mayor Nuala McAllister in attendance.
Pupils from Holy Cross Girls’ Primary School, Our Lady’s Primary School, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Sacred Heart Boys’ Primary School, Saint Patrick’s Primary School, Saint Therese of Lisieux Primary School, Saint Vincent de Paul Primary School gathered in the Girdwood Community Hub to discuss how the physical environment around children can impact their health.
The pupils piloted the use of a new dedicated teaching resource in the classroom over recent months and today was the culmination of that work. They presented their learning experiences and proposals that could improve their environments and make their local areas more ‘child-friendly’ to a panel of decision makers from Belfast City Council, Public Health Agency and Northern Ireland Housing Executive who gave feedback on the children’s proposals.
