Belfast Healthy Cities delivers programmes to meet the overall goals, targets and commitments set for Belfast as a World Health Organization (WHO) European Healthy City. Themes include improving health for all and reducing health inequities; and improving leadership and participatory governance for health.

Belfast Healthy Cities is also WHO Secretariat to the WHO European Healthy Cities Networks.

In May 2014, The Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir and Dr Eddie Rooney, Chief Executive, Public Health Agency submitted Belfast’s application to WHO European Healthy Cities Phase VI (2014-2018) on behalf of the city.The priorities for the application were agreed at a workshop, hosted by the Lord Mayor, which engaged a range of stakeholders from across the city.
