United Kingdom Healthy Cities National Network

Belfast is a current member of the UK Healthy Cities Network. The Network’s vision is to develop a creative, supportive and motivating network for UK local authorities, cities and towns that are tackling health inequalities and striving to put health improvement and health equity at the core of all local policies.

The National Healthy Cities & Counties of Ireland Network

Belfast is an associate member of the National Healthy Cities & Counties of Ireland Network.  The network aims to promote lifelong health and well-being; provide a means where local issues can influence national policy; and provide a voice for Ireland in the WHO Network of European National Healthy Cities Networks.

The Network has representatives from government departments, the HSE, the Institute of Public Health and the Federation of Irish Sport and local political and community representatives.

Iceland

Belfast Healthy Cities Chief Executive, Joan Devlin, attended the ‘Well-being for all – equity and health’ conference organised by the City of Reykjavik and Directorate of Health, Reykjavik.  Joan was invited to give a presentation on ‘Healthy Cities – Connected for Health’ including the experience of Belfast being a healthy city across all six phases since the inception of the European Healthy Cities Network.   

Joan also facilitated a further workshop with key staff from the Directorate of Health and City of Reykjavik on the health equity tool developed in Belfast.  More information >

Healthy Places, Healthy Children teaching resource

Belfast Healthy Cities Key Stage 2 teaching resource which focuses on children and the built environment was offered to cities in the WHO European Healthy Cities network to pilot. The following cities participated in piloting elements of the resource - Athens, Greece; Chapaevsk, Russia; Dimitrovgrad, Russia; Galway, Republic of Ireland; Madrid, Spain and Pula, Croatia.
