What school resources are available?
Welcome to the School Resources Section of Belfast Healthy Cities, where we provide valuable teaching tools designed to engage children in understanding health, well-being, and their environment. Our resources align with the Northern Ireland National Curriculum and aim to foster lifelong skills in health literacy, environmental awareness, and personal development.
We currently offer two main resources for primary school teachers: Healthy Places, Healthy Children and the Pharmacy Schools Programme. Read on to learn more about each resource, and if you’re ready to dive in, please register or log in to access the full range of teaching materials.
Healthy Places, Healthy Children
The Healthy Places, Healthy Children resource is a Key Stage 2 programme designed to introduce children to the vital links between the built environment and health. Created in collaboration with the Public Health Agency, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, and the Education Authority, this programme has already been successfully piloted by over 20 primary schools.
Through this resource, children will:
- Explore and research their local area, identifying ways to make it more child-friendly.
- Develop proposals to improve their environment and share these ideas with local decision-makers.
- Gain insights into how their surroundings impact health and well-being.
Aligned with The World Around Us Area of Learning and additional cross-curricular skills, Healthy Places, Healthy Children supports the Northern Ireland Curriculum. The programme includes video guides, unit booklets, and a variety of supporting resources. We encourage teachers to explore this resource and share any projects or successes with us upon completion.
Pharmacy Schools Programme
The Pharmacy Schools Programme is an innovative resource available for Primary 1 through Primary 7, aimed at raising awareness around self-care and the role of community pharmacies. This programme helps children understand how to manage common childhood ailments like colds, diarrhoea, hay fever, and head lice, while emphasising the importance of safe medicine use.
Through a health literacy approach, the Pharmacy Schools Programme teaches children about:
- The role of pharmacists and how to access health information and services.
- Common childhood illnesses and self-care practices.
- Medication safety and the appropriate use of health services.
This programme was co-produced with input from organisations in pharmacy, education, health, and the voluntary sector and includes lesson plans and resources aligned with the Personal Development and Mutual Understanding curriculum area. We’d love to hear about your experiences with this resource—feel free to share your learning outcomes and celebration events with us at info@belfasthealthycities.com or on Twitter @belfasthealthy
