Good health benefits all sectors and the whole of society by underpinning social and economic development and strengthening policies across all sectors. The economic and fiscal crisis facing many countries presents serious challenges and has the potential to undermine the positive progress that has been made on tackling health inequalities. There remains a need to tackle the challenge of improving the health of all society through a ‘health equity in all policies’ and intersectoral approach.
Belfast Healthy Cities’ 25th Anniversary Lecture Series: New Policies for a New Era, which was timed to coincide with celebrations of 25 years of Belfast as a World Health Organization Healthy City drew on local and international expertise and experience to examine how health is an issue which crosses all policy areas and demographics. Keynote speakers included Professor Ilona Kickbusch, Director, Global Health Programme, Graduate Institute of International & Development Studies; Dr Erio Ziglio, WHO Europe and Professor Alan Dyson, University of Manchester. Local inputs were made by Public Health Agency; Belfast City Council and DHSSPS.
